Author Biography & Bibliography
Karen is a fourth-generation Albertan who was born in High Prairie and raised on a farm just outside of town. She went on to attend the University of Alberta, and received a psychology degree from the University of Victoria. Karen then returned to Alberta to raise her family.
Four years after being hired as the library manager for the Hythe Municipal Library, Karen, who had always been an avid reader, decided to give fiction writing a try. Previously, she had written essays and articles for the local paper, but her real desire was to write a novel.
Her first novel, Run Like Jäger, was published in 2008 and received critical acclaim. Written for teens, the book was inspired by a cousin who took part in an exchange program and combined Karen’s passion and interest for young adult literature, German culture and World War II. Her second novel, Summer of Fire, was published in 2009 and has also received critical acclaim. As with her first novel, it is written for teens, set in Germany and has connections to World War II.
Karen has had the opportunity to visit Germany several times now to do research for her writing and has often given talks to groups about her travels and the researching and writing process.
